Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) sourced 20% of the city's power from renewable energy sources in 2010.

"We went from worst to first and quadrupled our renewable energy portfolio in a few short years, while also keeping our rates lower than other major utilities," Villaraigosa notes.

In 2005, Villaraigosa and the LADWP made a commitment to increase the utility's use of renewable energy from 5% to 20% by 2010. Wind power made up nearly 50% of all LADWP’s renewable energy last year, with solar contributing 1%.

To continue supporting the growth of renewable energy, LADWP plans to develop higher levels of solar power locally and introduce a feed-in tariff program that would allow private parties to sell power to LADWP for distribution on the grid, in addition to other programs.
