1. Can you help me find a job in solar sales?
Yes! As part of the course, we provide tips and techniques to leverage your solar sales training to find a job.  We also are actively find solar contractors interested hiring sales training graduates. We do not charge for the referrals and offer no guarantees of employment.  Currently, we have solar installation contractors in:

Arizona Maryland
California Nebraska
Colorado Nevada
Connecticut North Carolina
Florida New York
Georgia New Jersey
Illinois Texas
Massachusetts Utah
  Vermont

Most solar employers do not have formal solar sales training programs available for new hires.  In many cases, overworked business owners will provide mentoring on their specific processes, but they can't afford the time to offer general residential solar sales training.  As a candidate with a working knowledge of the solar sales process, you will stand out during a solar sales interview by demonstrating the skill set required to be successful in solar sales.

We recommend you confirm your eligibility to be a home improvement salesperson in your state.  In California, the Department of Consumer Affairs Contractors State License Board provides information and forms online.  The registration as a home improvement salesperson cannot begin until you are associated with a contractor because their signature is required.  In California, registrations can be denied according to the Business and Professions Code Section 480.  For the HIS registration requirements in other states, we recommend a Google Search for '<your state> home improvement sales registration' to learn more.

4. What is the average commission for solar sales and what are the hours?
The solar sales average commission depends on homeowner electricity usage and how much you charge.  Your goal is to eliminate as much of the expensive energy rates as the homeowner can afford to invest in a system.  A home with a minimal $150/month electric bill may produce a $20,000 total sale that costs the homeowner $11,000 after rebates & credits, while someone spending $425/month on electricity could produce a $110,000 total sale that costs the homeowner $60,000 after rebates & credits.  Homeowners will receive a low-risk, non-volatile, high-return on their solar investment and solar provides a significant increase to home values.

Solar sales average commission rates range between 3%-10% of the total sale.  A hypothetical company may provide a 4% commission until reaching monthly goal, then add retro-active commission kickers up to an additional 1% for exceeding goal and a 3% premium on self-generated leads.

Residential solar sales hours are generally Tuesday - Friday afternoons & evenings.  Saturdays are prime time to meet with homeowners to close deals or generate solar leads.  Many salespeople do not work Sunday & Monday.  Depending on your personal and employer solar lead generation capabilities, an average of three meetings per day is desirable.  Close rates on marketing qualified solar leads are between 10% - 25%.

<Industry Outlook>

Conservative Solar Sales Monthly Income Calculation:

$20,000/deal x 4% commission x 40 meetings/month x 25% close rate = $8,000/month

Ideal Solar Sales Monthly Income Calculation:

$30,000/deal x 8% commission w/ overages & kickers x 60 meetings/month x 25% close rate = $36,000/month

5. What makes you qualified to offer solar sales training and how can I use it on my resume?
Marketing, sales, coaching, training, solar certification and field experience on how to find a solar installer & doing solar sales calls with homeowners.  We provide just what you need to know to be a residential solar sales guru.  We found most solar training to be too technical and missing solar sales techniques that leverage the financial value of solar to homeowners.  Everyone wants to be a solar installer, but someone needs to sell it first, why not you?

During an interview with a solar contractor, use what you've learned in the solar sales training.  If you can sell yourself, you'll have the training to be ready to go on solar sales calls immediately.

Certificate of Completion & Letter of Recommendation provided.

6. an this course simplify what I learned in NABCEP training?
Absolutely! The information needed for NABCEP certification is different than is needed for grid-tie residential solar sales.  We boil down the solar technical information to 21 elements you must know.  We show you what you need to know on solar sales meetings.  Our solar sales process does not require you to climb on a roof.

7. What should I expect after I enroll and during the course? During the solar training course? And, during the group solar business development coaching?
After payment is received, you will receive the instructions and materials to prepare for the first class.  A separate email will include the meeting login information.
During the solar sales training, we recommend the following:

  • Printed handouts in a 3 ring binder, tabbed by document name.
  • Land line voice connection to the conference call
  • Internet connection logged into gotomeeting.com
  • Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint

During the classes, we review each module, work as a group to highlight key points using the new skills and provide feedback.  We encourage rigorous group participation, lots of questions, tons of notes and individual hard work practicing the concepts between classes.  We are providing a material review so you can practice from your notes.

Every effort should be made to attend classes in one week with completed homework assignments.  Longer timelines for course completion may be available depending on scheduling.

The solar NLP sales model includes:

  1. Rapport building
  2. Needs analysis

11. How do I create a solar marketing budget?

99% cannot answer this question when I asked. :(

Pick a % of gross revenue. Anything. :)

First, you must create a 12 month forecast to establish goals and strategize around how to make it happen.

Assume a 10% marketing budget and plan your schedule & cash flow based on 3-4 months to see growth.

Some sustain their busienss on a 3-5% marketing budget because of cash flow fears, selling on price or lack of confidence they can grow profitably.

If there's no cash going down the funnel to fuel the vehicle, you will have to get out and push.

Establish an hourly rate for the time your team will put into direct marketing campaigns.

Campaigns and brand awareness take density and repetition to build perpectuating results.

Working with an experienced coach and marketing services provider like Rich Hessler helps you work effectively and avoid costly mistakes.

It is what you don't know that will get you. We identify business opportunities from financial statements and setup systems to track every marketing campaign so it can be improved or eliminated.

Solar Marketing Budget Example:

2 Deals/mo
$70,000 Total Income
$39,000 Gross Profit
$25,000 Overhead including Marketing
    $7,000 Marketing Budget
    ~$3,500 Cash 5%
    ~28-100 Labor Hours
$14,000 Profit after COGS, Labor & Overhead
